Texas A&M Judo History
The Texas A&M University Judo Team was established in 1963 . It has provided a sport for those interested in competition at the local, state, national and international level. The judo program is open to all students, faculty and staff of Texas A&M. Competition is the main focus of this organization but non-competitors are always welcome.

The 2008-2009 Texas A&M Judo coaches are Bob Perez (1993-2008), Dan Gomez(2007-2008) and JF Chamberland (2005-2008). Previous coaches include Theo Williams (2000-2005) and Dr. Gary Berliner (1988-1992) Bob Perez was the Assistant Coach from 1988-1992 under Head Coach, Dr. Gary Berliner and assumed the coaching duties in 1993 and has since led the team and several individuals to state and national titles. He was selected runner up to the Outstanding National Collegiate Coach by the National Collegiate Judo Association in 1998. Mr. Perez served as assistant coach to the 1998 World University Championship team in Prague, Czech Republic and Head Coach for the USA team at the Puerto Rico International in 2002.

The Texas A&M Judo Team emerged as the dominant collegiate judo team in the State of Texas. The Aggies have won the Texas Collegiate Judo Conference Title in 1990, 1992-1997, 2000-2008. The A&M Judo Team hosted the 1992 and the 1998 National Collegiate Judo Championships. The A&M Judo Team finished second place in the final point standings in 1996, 1998,2000 and 2004. The team placed third in 1997, 1999, 2005, 2006 and 2007. The Team placed 5th in the 2003 and 2008 Nationals. The Novice team was the Men's Novice Team Champions at the National Collegiate Judo Championships.

The Aggies also participated in the Mid South Conference, a five state region consisting of Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi. The Aggies finished 2nd in the first year of established conference in 2000. The Texas A&M Judo team won the team tournament in 2001, 2002 and 2003.

The Texas A&M Judo Endowed Judo Scholarship was established in January 2006. Currently, there are two annual $1000 scholarships available to any current member or any incoming student. This scholarship is a competitive and will be awarded to individuals based on their judo endevours.

The Aggie Judo Team is part of the Department of Recreational Sports at Texas A&M University. The judo team is also a member of the United States Judo Inc., Texas Judo Inc., United States Judo Association, and the National Collegiate Judo Association. The Texas A&M Judo Team is funded through the Department of Rec Sports which assist the team members in traveling expenses. Although competition is emphasized it is not mandatory. Both men and women are encouraged to join and no experience is necessary. The Texas A&M team consists of roughly 40 memebers, 15-20 of whom compete on a regualar basis. The team attends approximately 20 tournaments per year, traveling to cities around the US, as well as Canada and Mexico. Practice days are four times a week, Monday through Thursday from 7:00 to 10PM. Team weight lifting occurs 2-3 times per week. Due to the exntesive tournament travel, weekend practices are not scheduled. Our dues are $55 per semester or $85 for two semesters. The dues help offset our travel expenses. The Department of Rec Sports endows us with enough money to cover nearly 80% of all our traveling expenses. There are no requirements to be on the team. Anyone who wants to join is allowed.
